Since 1984, Lori has worked in the field of criminal law. She relocated from metropolitan New York to the Berkshires in 1993, and began practicing in Cain Hibbard's Criminal Law Department, working closely with Leonard H. Cohen. In both New York and Massachusetts, she represents clients charged with criminal offenses in state and federal trial and appellate courts. The cases she handles range from misdemeanor offenses to homicide and cover a broad spectrum including serious white-collar and government corruption cases.

Experience Highlights

Won a ruling from a U.S. District Court that declared a portion of a federal drug law to be unconstitutional.

Successfully obtained a judgment of acquittal entered by a federal court judge at the close of evidence in a drug case before the case was submitted to the jury.

Successfully argued for sentences lesser than the penalties contained in federal sentencing guidelines.

Prevailed on numerous motions to suppress evidence in state criminal prosecutions.

Speaking Engagements and Teaching

Lori has presented a seminar in defending an OUI case for Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education.

Each year, Lori spends a week at her law school alma mater, Cardozo School of Law in New York , as a faculty member in the yearly Intensive Trial Advocacy Program for second- and third-year law students. The program is run by her law school professor and mentor, Barry Scheck of the Innocence Project.

Professional History

Lori has been a criminal defense lawyer for her entire legal career, which began in 1984 when she joined the Criminal Defense Division of the Legal Aid Society of the City of New York in the Bronx . While there, she represented indigent defendants in the state court system, from arraignment through appeal. After three years in the Bronx , Lori was named an assistant federal defender in the Eastern District of New York, where she represented federal criminal defendants from all over the world.

In the Community

Lori serves on the board of directors of the Railroad Street Youth Project in Great Barrington and donates her legal services to the organization. She also serves on the board of the Berkshire Center for Families and Children. Her commitment to youth is strongest at home with her two children. On weekends, depending on the season, she can be found skiing, riding her bicycle, hiking, kayaking or tending to her gardens. She also enjoys movies and reading.
